DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 13: The US Senate introduced the Assuring the Future of Tibet Act of 2026 (AFTA) on Tuesday, a bipartisan measure aimed at reinforcing Washington’s long-term engagement with the Tibetan people and strengthening the international standing of their democratically elected leadership.
Introduced by Senators Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho), with Senators Tim Kaine (D-Virginia), Todd Young (R-Indiana), Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada), and Rick Scott (R-Florida) as original co-sponsors, the legislation is the Senate companion to H.R. 8982, introduced in the House of Representatives in May by Representatives Jim McGovern (D-Massachusetts) and Michael McCaul (...
