Organizers said the vigil aimed to draw greater international attention to the Tibet issue and protest China's Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, which they say further undermines Tibetan identity and culture. Longtime Tibet supporter Richard Gere joined the gathering and paid tribute to the late Lobga Rangzen, honoring his sacrifice and expressing continued support for the Tibetan people's struggle for freedom and human rights.
