Chinese authorities have imposed sweeping restrictions on Tibetans seeking to enter the flood-devastated Kyirong region of occupied Tibet to assist affected communities, as hundreds remain missing following one of the deadliest disasters to strike the Himalayan border region in recent years.
The restrictions come in the aftermath of a catastrophic glacier collapse on August 26 that unleashed a massive torrent of ice, rock, mud and water through the mountainous Nepal-Tibet border region. The disaster devastated communities and infrastructure on both sides of the border, destroying homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and the Kyirong border crossing, an important trade and pilgrimage route connecting Tibet and Nepal.<...
