DHARAMSHALA, October 10, 2026 — Tibetan theatrical production ‘Phayul’ (Homeland) had its world premiere on Saturday at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) Hall in Dharamshala, ahead of an international tour. The Tibetan-language play revisits the emergence of resistance to Chinese rule in eastern Tibet during the 1950s.
A prequel to the acclaimed play ‘Pah-Lak’ (Father), ‘Phayul’ returns to one of the most turbulent chapters in Tibet’s modern history. Its historical setting places the development of resistance in eastern Tibet at the centre of the production.
The play was written by Indian playwright Abhishek Majumdar and co-directed by Lhakpa Tsering and Harald (Harry) Fuhrmann. Tibet Theatre developed the production in collaboration with local artists over more than three years, bringing together an extended creative process ahead of its first public staging.
