Recently, Nepal cancelled plans to host a leading international Tibetan studies seminar at Kathmandu University, reportedly following pressure from China. We spoke with Professor Carole McGranahan, who was due to participate in the conference. She said she felt “sad” and described the decision as “shameful,” noting that this was only the third International Association for Tibetan Studies (IATS) conference to be held in Asia and had offered an important opportunity for scholars from across the region to participate. She also expressed concern over the growing political pressure on academic spaces and the impact such interference could have on the future of Tibetan studies.
