The night before his arrival, young activists from Students for a Free Tibet scaled a pole and unfurled banners reading “Xi Jinping = Genocide” and “Tibet is Facing Ecocide: Free Tibet,” alongside the Tibetan national flag.On the day of Xi’s arrival, around 50 Tibetan Youth Congress activists also staged a protest on Bhairon Marg and were detained. But what was going through the minds of these young Tibetans when they decided to take such risks? After their release, we spoke to some of the activists behind the protests about their motivations, their fears and what they wanted the world to hear.
